Summer is coming to a close and the kiddies are back in school. We can’t prove that fall beginnings are the reason for decreased movie attendance, but there’s a good chance. The mediocre selection at the box office also did not help this weekend’s numbers.
Weekend ticket sales were estimated between $65 and $67 million, making it the worst weekend at the box office since September 21-23, 2001.
“The Possession” held onto the number one spot at $9.5 million. Steven Friedlander from CBS Film explained to the LA Times, “Nobody picks the first weekend of September because they think it’s going to be a huge gross.”
Next weekend’s numbers will determine if Steven’s explanation is in fact true.
