VOD Takes A Bigger Piece of Home Entertainment Pie

VOD or video on demand is taking a growing piece of the home entertainment pie. Up over 20%, VOD is surely showing signs of cannibalizing packaged DVDs, which are down 11%.

Based on the Gravitas Ventures pie graph below, there will be a need to differentiate the VOD experience to create upsells in additional merchandise, deeper recommendations of similar titles and packages that open up future consumer value.

Per Fast Company:

… [W]ill DVD sales decline as Instant video becomes more popular on Amazon?

“I wouldn’t speculate on what I think sales will be in the future, but I can tell you what we’re seeing right now, which is that both formats–Instant and physical–are doing well,” Griffin [Amazon] says. “Customers are still very interested in both.”

Via Variety:

• DVD sales generated $14 billion in 2010, down from last year’s $15.8 billion.

• Blu-ray sales earned $1.8 billion; 170 million Blu-rays shipped to retailers.

• VOD brought in $1.8 billion, up 20.8%.

• Electronic sell through sales grew 15.7% to generate $683 million.

The sales figures were mostly in line with a report released by Screen Digest earlier this week.

“We continued to see strong growth in Blu-ray and significant gains in digital distribution this year, despite a tough economy,” said Ron Sanders, president of the DEG and prexy of Warner Home Video. “We also saw a slight increase in consumer transactions, which is a clear indication that consumer demand for home entertainment remains healthy.”

How Do You Discover Movies?

At BIGSTAR, we’re committed to helping our users “discover and demand” – yes, we’re trademarking “discovery & demand platform” – new and classic titles that fit their movie appetite.

We try to get into the minds of you, the consumer, and what you want to view given all of the digital video noise on the market. We review user data, test content on Google Adwords and Facebook CPC, run our gallery of Facebook genre pages, create movie badges (media incentives?) for virtual check-ins, and source new movie demands on a minute-to-minute basis.

Are there enough users on any given title to make the case to “studio x” or “cable tv company y” or “indie producer z” that BIGSTAR should offer these titles to consumers?Similar to Quirky.com, we want users to design our libraries, help curate them right alongside Les Garland (one of MTV’s founding fathers… Google him!) and Emerald Brooke (our hip international film festival junkie) who help secure us great movies.

As consumers move from packaged DVDs (down nearly 44% last year!) to digital subscription and rentals, how will they even know what movies they’ve watched, enjoyed, turned off mid-stream and been recommended. We think we have that solution – in development – now.

So, let’s leave you with an infographic model from Hunch.com that we look at, add to our thinking, whiteboard (less artistically of course unless you know of any good infographic sweatshops…), have philosophical arguments over dinners in Miami, and then turn into development aims for our R&D group.

The more important lesson here is how do you discover movies? How will you discover via word of mouth, if word of mouth has to compete with Google, Facebook, Flipboard, Zite, Zinio, TheDaily, HuffPo, Yahoo! (IntoNow), WB Digital Everywhere (Flixster, Rotten Tomatoes), IMDB (and its Watchlist), etc and etc galore?

We think it’s based around your activity – literally everything you do on BIGSTAR, no matter the platform, device or time of day, points you (and us) to how you discover new movies.
