MIB 3 Knocks Avengers

Will Smith has done it again! “Men in Black 3″ debuted at the box office this weekend, stealing the #1 spot from “The Avengers.”

Taking home $55 million domestically, the film battled the superheros this Memorial Day weekend.

Disney’s “The Avengers” grew its three-week domestic total to an unbelievable $514 million.

“Chernobyl Diaries” was a complete flop this weekend, barely claiming the #5 slot with $8 million.

“Men in Black 3″ actually did not perform as well as its predecessors, as both the first and second films opened with just over $50 million when ticket prices were cheaper than today.

“Battleship” will continue to drift off of the domestic front in the weeks ahead. So far, “The Avengers” and “Men in Black 3″ are the only noteworthy successes at the summer box office.

Will Smith’s threequel is expected to surpass $202 million worldwide by the end of this Memorial Day weekend due to the film’s popularity in Asia.

This film uses Mario Petrucci’s award-winning poem Heavy Water, to tell the story of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear explosion and its catastrophic aftermath. After reactor four at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant explodes, the danger is not immediately communicated and the local population go about their business as usual. After three days, an area the size of England becomes contaminated with radioactive dust, contaminating the land. This is the story of the people who dealt with the world’s worst nuclear disaster at ground level: the fire fighters, the soldiers, the ‘liquidators’ and their families.
