Be prepared to have all of your current views of our eating habits turned on it’s head. Tom debunks myth after myth about fast food, using government data, medical research and doctors opinions. Even if you don’t agree with everything that is presented in the movie, it is a serious wakeup call for us ill informed consumers. Really funny, entertaining and sadly it may be true.

Genre for the Weekend: Documentary

Strictly Background“: For decades, film and television audiences have watched their favorite stars with little thought or concern for the people standing behind them. All of that is about to change as “Strictly Background” explores the charm and determination of some of Hollywood’s hardest working actors, professional “extras.” Turning industry convention on its head, this humorous & heartfelt documentary follows ten background actors as they navigate their way on and off the set. Both a behind-the-scenes look at Hollywood and a character-driven film, “Strictly Background” is a dynamic exploration into the pursuit of stardom and the real life struggle to stand out.

Carbon Nation“: An optimistic (and witty) discovery of what people are already doing, what we as a nation could be doing and what the world needs to do to prevent (or at least slow down) the impending climate crisis.

Conned“:  The Boston Underworld is too small for all of them. And there’s only one big prize left. It’s about to go under. All the smart operators have gone to jail, and all that’s left behind are the eccentric whacks and nut jobs deemed unworthy of being put behind bars. From Napolitano who runs the North End with the belief that every room is bugged, to Mr. Million, who is so insecure he needs constant reassurance, to a rampant gang that can’t take directions from anyone, simply because they can’t hear a single thing- their preferred method of communication is sign language which leaves everyone asking, just what is going on? Out of this melting pot of eccentric and dysfunctional criminals, ambitions arise and inevitably clash. With less and less up for stake, there is a sense of urgency for everyone to grab what they can and make a run for it before the underworld is shut down for good.

WATCH: Trailer For Sundance 2013 Climbing Documentary ‘THE SUMMIT’

We’ve got yet another indie film recommendation for you from Sundance!

Premiering at Sundance Film Festival this week is the gripping film ‘THE SUMMIT’, directed by Nick Ryan, about “the deadliest day on the world’s most dangerous mountain”, K2.

Ever seen Stallone’s ‘Cliffhanger’?  Well ‘THE SUMMIT’ makes that flick look like a joke.  And don’t expect bad guys, good guys, and a whole-hearted happy ending where we all sit around the log cabin and tell stories.  This here film is very real, uses actual footage, interviews, and hits on the debatable and controversial nature of the search and sport of modern adventure.

Synopsis:

In August 2008, twenty-four climbers from several international expeditions converged on High Camp of K2, the last stop before the summit of the most dangerous mountain on earth.  Forty-eight hours later, eleven had been killed or had vanished, making it the worst K2 climbing disaster in history.

In a century of assaults on K2, only about 300 people have ever seen the view from the planet’s second highest peak.  More than a quarter of those who made it didn’t live long enough to share the glory, or to tell the tale.

At the heart of ‘The Summit’ lies a mystery about one extraordinary man, Ger McDonnell. By all accounts, he was faced with a heart-breaking dilemma— at the very limit of his mortal resources, he encountered a disastrous scene and a moral dilemma: three climbers tangled up in ropes and running out of time.  In the death zone, above 8,000 metres, the body is literally dying with each passing second.  Morality is skewed 180 degrees from the rest of life. When a climber falls or wanders off the trail, the unwritten code of the mountain is to leave them for dead.  Had Ger McDonnell stuck to the climbers’ code, he might still be alive.

Here’s the trailer…
