BIGSTAR Review

"Rey, what are ya doing?? You got a cartoon face on your ass, a cigarette in your p***y, and Mai's teddy bear she just spent 100,000 tickets for in the game room downstairs!" ~JO (Sarah Nicklin) to Reyna (Glenda Galeano), as they both prep and argue about the upcoming fetish convention whilst in their hotel room… and then the s**t hits the fan… or in this case, the bear. Yeah, just wait for it. Fun times.

In an April 2013 preview, FANGORIA's Michael Gingold said about it, "Spank you very much", and brothers and sisters, WILL IT EVER… it'll literally "spank" you into an eye-roll, ending into a collective *facepalm*. Not able to make up its mind whether it wants itself to be either a poor gal's HANGOVER or a sexy thriller, you're getting a lot of mixed messages. We're also force-fed a character, Angel, that is so two-dimensional and over-the-top annoying, I want to see more development out of that stuffed bear that got pooped on. Bill Oberst Jr., who you might remember from my January 25th review of ARMYNEL, again stars in yet another hokey slasher flick here, THIS time as The Wolf (funny how the "wolf" was in a 2014 film called COYOTE), with his "summer sausage" hanging out atop his car, in all his demented, full moon glory. This is a four female-led indie whose overall dichotomy and pecking order seem to be cut from a rough episode of ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK, with Glenda Galeano's Reyna coming across as "head bitch." Originally titled simply THE FETISH SET, liberties to capitalize on another popular fetish film from Universal Studios (*ahem-ahem*) were taken, and I'm now curious to see who gets sued. Speaking of borrowing ideas, Angel seems to remind me of Didi Conn's Frenchy from GREASE thrown into a psychological thriller. Um, Angel? STOP GETTING INTO TROUBLE, GIRL, AND QUIT WONDERING OFF!!! It's like she's purposely being annoying, almost putting it "on" as an ac... waitaminute. Hmmmm. Mei's "Spunky Junkie 07" mud-n-blood spattered red tank-top would make the most obscure cosplay at conventions for older Asian-American women, though. With a budget of $250,000 (really that much??), I suppose there's got to be worse ways to spend a 1/4 of a mil in Texas.

I had a hard time with the character of Reyna, in trying to decipher her thick accent. At times it was completely unintelligible. Perhaps some ADR work would have been helpful. [NOTE:If you're not familiar with ADR, check out my *Starina Johnson interview* from earlier today; I give a quick rundown on that process.] There's nudity, gore, all the stuff you'd TRULY expect out of A DARKER FIFTY SHADES: THE FETISH SET. I'm just a tad underwhelmed, here. The ending twist is decent, but I really was hoping from more out of that bear!
