BIGSTAR Review

"Deeper and deeper I go, toward the back of the train. How long is this train? I've never seen the end of it." ~CEE (Megan Gold), describing the endless, hopeless train ride from the pits of hell that seems to have come from the mind of 50's era Ingmar Bergman.

Winner of a 3rd Place *Jury Prize* at the 2008 Fantasia Film Festival, and also a recipient for the *Best Animated Feature Film* Award at the 2008 Sitges-Catalonian International Film Festival, this animated macabre nightmare has everything from giant pig-faced nurses, to pitchforked babies being incinerated alive, mutant infants missing limbs, and even mysterious masked strangers in steampunk goggles! Imagine if after painting "Anatomical Pieces," an indie studio went up to French artist Theodore Gericault and asked, "Hey Theo, wanna do a flash animation film that'll make the viewer want to shoot themselves in the face afterwards?" Yeah, this is exactly what you get with FROM INSIDE, a trippy little flick that very well makes Cormac McCarthy's THE ROAD movie adaptation look like a motivational family sports film from Disney. Narrated by the sole main character, Cee (Megan Gold), you follow her through a surreal series of drab and harrowing dystopian events aboard a steam locomotive, while she's with child. It's not made clear, but this more or less takes place in a post-apocalyptic reality, just surrounded by death and despair. With rowboat scenes with the mysterious Bandaged Man on an endless lake of corpse-filled blood, or the railway slaughter scene resulting in mounds of dead buffalos with their brains blown out point blank, you'll find yourself asking "Why the hell!?! WHAT the hell!?!?!" Based off of his own graphic novel, John Bergin took this film to fests around the globe including the 2008 Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival, the 2009 Gerardmer Film Festival, the 2009 Dead by Dawn- Scotland's International Horror Film Festival, and the 2010 Titanic International Filmpresence Festival, to name but a few.

This is a true art piece, and it's numbing and depressing, yet stylistically unique and oddly enthralling. A moving painting of dissonance, it's a great way to get your mood down. FROM INSIDE also includes a special edition soundtrack by electronic and industrial music pioneer Gary Numan and Ade Fenton. It's TRULY going to give you nightmares!
