BIGSTAR Review

"Here's the thing about patent leather, Howard; even in water, fingerprints show up. If what she says is true, we should find somebody else's prints." ~DETECTIVE MARK O'HAGAN (Nick Mancuso) during a phone call to his precinct after finding a murdered girl's shoe in the lake while piecing together the drowning mystery of the young Brawnson sisters -the same night that young Mary Solis (Kaylee Bryant) was reported missing and lost her memory... along with her SOUL! It certainly doesn't help the case, however, that immediately AFTER said phone call, our good detective witnesses a glowing, banshee-like entity floating on the water... in broad daylight! Cue suspense music!

Making its premiere at the 2014 LA Femme International Film Festival, as well as going on to win numerous accolades including an *Independent Spirit Award* at the 2014 Boston Independent Film Festival and *Best Director* for Jennifer B. White at the 2014 Boston International Film Festival, MARY LOSS OF SOUL is (in essence) low-budgeted lite tween fare ($700,000 to be exact) that starts off with a Lifetime Channel mystique, but clumsily concludes with a Disney/Nick Jr.-esque finish. With a cast that (at first) seems quite affable for setting the particular mood of storytelling needed for a horror/thriller drama, the film stars Kaylee Bryant (Lacey from ABC's THE REAL O'NEALS), José Zúñiga (Carlos Geller from NBC's THE EVENT), Catherine Black (Vanden from 2000′s cult classic AMERICAN PSYCHO) and Nick Mancuso, who on NBC's short-lived series THE FIRM had that creepy recurring role of the mysterious "Peanut-Eating Man". Yeah, that guy. The problem with MARY LOSS OF SOUL, is that it has the opportunity to embrace a lighter, emotional story of spiritual healing that would fit happily within a touching Hallmark movie-of-the-week, yet it suffers from the sad trope of "I-can't-decide-what-genre-I'll-be-accepted-as-the-most-so-I'll-be-an-uneven-glob-of-all-of-them".

WRITER'S ...more

Anywho, the best performances come from both Mancuso and Emma Gruttadauria, who respectively play the homicide Detective and the Irish healer and Shaman who decides to help the Solis family with their paranormal dilemma. The special effects for the ghostly spirit will TRULY appear less hokey if when watching, the viewer turns down their tint/brightness adjustment on their screens. Also, it would've helped if the writer had established that the Mom new karate AT THE BEGINNING!! I'm not saying you'll hate it, but if the ending doesn't make you *facepalm*... I'll do it FOR you. Again. It's MARY LOSS OF SOUL, here on BIGSTAR. Loss of time is your problem.
