Description
The Nile was always the cultural and economic corridor linking Egypt with Black Africa. The pharaohs often marched south to exploit the raw materials of Nubia, now Sudan. But from the 3rd century B.C. a proud new state emerged around Meroe: influenced by Black Africa, it developed its own culture and system of writing. Women played a key role in this multicultural realm - as queens, priests and warriors.
