In the days following World War II, Charles Wills (Van Johnson) meets Helen (Elizabeth Taylor) and her sister Marion (Donna Reed) in the newly liberated Paris. He marries Helen, much to Marion's dismay, but their life together is marred by Charles' lack of success as an author. When it all becomes too much, Charles leaves his wife and daughter to return to America. Years later, he wonders if he made the right decision...
